The Society of Professional Journalists Cleveland chapter (SPJ Cleveland) is a vital organization committed to promoting high standards of journalism, advocating for press freedom, and protecting the public’s right to know. The chapter, chartered in 1950, works tirelessly to defend the First Amendment, uphold ethical practices in journalism, and provide journalists with professional development opportunities at every stage of their careers. Additionally, SPJ Cleveland works closely with campus chapters at John Carroll University and Cleveland State University.

One of SPJ's missions is "to inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists." At SPJ Cleveland, the Philip W. Porter Scholarship Fund was established in 1964. Since then, a total of $240,000 has been awarded to 60 outstanding high school seniors who planned to major in journalism and related fields in college. It offers a student $1,000 for each of their four years in college. Porter Scholarship winners went on to work at The Plain Dealer, Akron Beacon Journal, USA TODAY, NBC News, Chicago Tribune, Newsday, United Press International, the Associated Press and other major outlets.
